Renton Accessible Playground
The Renton Accessible Playground is a joint effort of the City of Renton, the Renton School District and Renton Rotary. The City is working with and actively seeking additional funding partners. The accessible playground is being designed for all abilities and will be co-located on the North Highlands Neighborhood Center and the Hillcrest Early Childhood Learning Center properties. Veterans Memorial Park to Receive Replacement Plaque
Renton’s Veterans Memorial Park opened in 2003, and offers a unique setting to view and reflect on the names of nearly 2,000 etched marble plaques. Each plaque represents and honors a military veteran. Each plaque is unique, and deserves to be respected. Every Memorial Day, the City of Renton and local veterans groups provide a stirring ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park.
Since the Park opened, maintaining the marble plaques has involved an inordinate amount of care by the city’s Parks crews to keep them looking as clean and respectful as possible. Unfortunately, the marble material used, along with the grout backing, is impossible to keep pristine, leaving cracked and stained marble.
The city is in the process of hiring a contractor to install new black granite plaques, which will replace all existing etched or blank marble plaques. This new material and its attachment to the concrete walls will provide decades of minimally required maintenance. All existing etched plaques will be replicated in the same location that they currently reside.
The work is scheduled to take place this fall, and is being funded by a generous grant from the Custer Fund, which is administered by the Renton Community Foundation.
